Despite all species being protected by wildlife protection law, the capture of primates is ongoing here in Vietnam and has played a major role in the critical decline of the country’s endemic species.
The pet trade is only one of the threats on the list, but it concerns most of the primates we have been rescuing over the years since the animals are kept alive and can be spotted by neighbors or relatives and denounced to the authorities before their life is at risk.
The irony of the pet trade flourishing is that it often relies on the ignorance (if not denial) of the buyer, in Asian and Western countries alike. The fact is, there is plenty of reasons not to keep a primate in your home. Let’s remind some of them:
Bất chấp việc tất cả các loài động vật hoang dã đang được bảo vệ bởi luật pháp, việc săn bắt linh trưởng vẫn tiếp tục diễn ra và là nguyên do chính dẫn đến sự giảm số lượng của các loài đặc hữu.
Dù nạn buôn bán động vật hang dã chỉ là một trong các mối đe dọa, nó lại liên quan đến phần lớn các cá thể linh trưởng được cứu hộ trong các năm vừa qua do các cá thể được giữ và có thể được phát hiện và báo các ban ngành chức năng bởi hàng xóm hoặc họ hàng trước khi tính mạng của chúng bị đe dọa.
Trớ trêu thay, nạn buôn bán ngày càng trở nên phổ biến do sự thiếu hiểu biết (thậm chí là trốn tránh sự thực) của người mua đến từ các quốc gia châu Á và phương Tây. Quả thực vậy, có rất nhiều lý do để giữ một cá thể linh trưởng trong nhà của bạn. Hãy xem xét một số lý do sau:
Our center has been packed with school groups during the whole month of October.
This year we had the pleasure to receive teenagers from a Hong Kong school for the first time, but also the 6th grade pupils of the United Nations International School of Hanoi, who are now coming every year!
We are always particularly enthusiastic to catch the attention of the young publics, who will be the wildlife protectors of tomorrow. Educating the youth about facts and issues facing Vietnam primates is more demanding than a classic tour! It is also the occasion for EPRC to make it fun and truly memorable, so our little visitors will not only take pictures but hopefully be driven to take a stand for them against extinction.
Trung tâm của chúng tôi chật kín với những đoàn học sinh thăm quan suốt cả tháng Mười. Năm nay, chúng tôi lần đầu tiên rất hân hạnh được đón đoàn thanh thiếu niên đến từ trường quốc tế Hồng Kông, và cả đoàn học sinh hàng năm của Trường Quốc tế Liên Hợp Quốc tại Hà Nội!
Chúng tôi luôn vui khi có được sự chú ý của giới trẻ, những người sẽ là người bảo vệ động vật hoang dã trong tương lai. Việc giáo dục giới trẻ về các hiện trạng và vấn đề mà người Việt Nam đang phải đối mặt đòi hỏi nhiều hơn là một tour du lịch thông thường! Đây cũng là dịp để EPRC làm cho nó trở nên thú vị và thật sự đáng nhớ, vì vậy những vị khách nhỏ của chúng tôi sẽ không chỉ đến đây để chụp ảnh mà sẽ còn hi vọng được dẫn dắt để chống lại sự tuyệt chủng.
As you know, the EPRC is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. In 1993, we started very small with only a few animals and very few cages. As the Center grew bigger, we received more primates and started to have more babies around. We have always struggled a bit with money to keep up the standard in captive care and have always done our best. Especially when infants arrived at the Center, we worked even harder!
Như bạn đã biết, EPRC đang kỷ niệm 25 năm thành lập. Vào năm 1993, chúng tôi bắt đầu chỉ với một vài cá thể và một vài chuồng trại. Khi Trung tâm phát triển dần, chúng tôi nhận được nhiều cá thể linh trưởng hơn và bắt đầu có nhiều em bé hơn. Chúng tôi luôn phải vật lộn về tiền bạc để đảm bảo tiêu chuẩn trong việc chăm sóc trong môi trường chuồng trại và luôn luôn làm hết sức mình. Đặc biệt là khi có cá thể nhỏ đến Trung tâm, chúng tôi càng làm việc chăm chỉ hơn!
Life can be boring with animals in captivity without some spice. Therefore, enrichment for primates is an important daily task which EPRC staff have to complete to keep the animals healthy and sane.
Enrichment for primates is created to help the animals keep their wild instinct of looking for food. If their food is laid out every time right in front of their eyes, the primates will gradually become lazy and independent on human support – which is not what we want for primates at a rescue center.
Gibbons are those who are given the most complicated types of enrichment because of their intelligence. They can use their fingers in a really flexible way to search for food and use their smart brain to solve the enrichment puzzles.
August was a busy month for EPRC, because 3 cases of confiscations were made across the land of Vietnam. Until now, the rescued primates are still in good condition and under careful supervision in the Quarantine Area of Vietnam.
First confiscation was at the end of July – beginning of August. We received a call from Head Ranger Quarter in Nam Dinh province about a female gibbon. EPRC staff immediately go to the city which is 2 hours away from our center and picked up the gibbon.
Her health condition is not bad, but it seems that she was fed a lot of milk which is not good for such an adult gibbon. The cage from Head Ranger Quarter was too small for her, so we moved her to our special Transfer Box. After 5 hours (due to paperwork + transportation time), she arrived at EPRC safe and sound.
Last weekend on October 22nd, local students from Cuc Phuong Primary School experienced for the first time a full-day primate education trip in the forest that engaged them with the nature and introduced them to captive wildlife through various creative activities.
This Primate Education Day is initiated by the Endangered Primate Rescue Center, in collaboration with the Cuc Phuong National Park’s Conservation Awareness Program (CAP), with the aim of raising awareness and improving knowledge about the forest and primates in students studying and living in the buffer zone of Cuc Phuong National Park, where the EPRC is based.
