The End of the Stick Insects Season

These last weeks, we have been very sorry to observe a huge population decline… of stick insects! This curious animal is a great source of proteins for our Lorises who would give anything to get a bite of it for dinner.

Although stick insects are known for their ingenious capacity to ensure their survival and protection from predators, they couldn’t escape from the sharpened sight of our volunteers squad who have been chasing them tirelessly these last months to feed our little primates.

The season has been good and enabled us to ensure sufficient supply for winter, by freezing a fair amount of stick insects and mixing them into a green creamy paste (yum!). This way our Lorises will still be able to enjoy their favorite food while stick insects are hibernating.

Trong những tuần vừa qua, chúng tôi rất tiếc khi phải chứng kiến sự suy giảm dân số nhah chóng… của bọ que! Loài động vật kì lạ này là một nguồn proten quý báu cho cu li chúng tôi, loài động vật sẽ làm bất cứ điều gì để có được một miệng đầy bọ que cho bữa ăn tối.

Dù rằng bọ que được biết đến với khả năng ngụy trang khéo léo nhằm đảm bảo sự sống còn và bảo vệ chúng khỏi những kẻ săn mồi, chúng không thể thoát khỏi những đôi mắt sắc sảo của đội ngũ tình nguyện viên của chúng tôi.

Mùa bọ que vừa qua khá tốt và đã giúp đảm bảo được nguồn cung cấp thực phẩm đầy đủ cho mùa đông, bằng cách đông đá một lượng bọ que khá lớn và đánh sinh tố chúng thành một loại patê xanh lá cây (ngon miệng ghê!). Dựa trên phương pháp này, cu li của chúng tôi vẫn có thể được thưởng thức món ăn yêu thích của chúng khi mà bọ que còn đang ngủ đông.

Oh hi there! Sorry for the shocking content This is an sexual organ of a male Grey-Shanked Douc Langur (Pygathrix cinerea) in its “peak”. In EPRC, we usually joke that his clock likes to indicate at exact 12 o’clock.

FACT
It is interesting that douc langurs do not only have their sexual organs erected because of mating desire. Like this photo, it was taken when we started grouping 3 grey-shanked douc langurs and the male was pretty excited (non-sexually because he hadn’t seen the females at that time yet). They also “enlarge” their p*nis in front of an enemy because they want to appear bigger in order to scare away the enemy.

Stick insects are favorite food of lorises. In this short video, you will have a chance to see 2 twin pygmy lorises sharing a single insect. Their names are Flip and Flop who were confiscated and hand-reared in EPRC.

A Toad at EPRC?!?

A Toad Friend

Some weeks ago, we observed a strange scene right in EPRC. CP, the Delacour’s Langur found a toad and held it for straight 2 days. She didn’t harm the toad at all, instead, was embracing it and took care of it well.

We have never seen this before, but assume that CP might be pregnant and she was preparing for her upcoming baby. However, until now, no baby has been delivered. We will keep waiting and updating for you all

Loris Release Program Success – Three Lorises Returned to Forest

Lorises Returned to the Forest in Cuc Phuong National Park

On 9/10, after a short period of rehabilitation in the EPRC’s facility, three slow lorises who passed the health and behaviour assessment for our loris release program finally returned to the forest in Cuc Phuong National Park.

This loris release, including two individuals who were transferred to the EPRC from a governmental rescue center for a better chance of release and one individual who was surrendered voluntarily to the EPRC from a local resident earlier this year, were carried out inside Cuc Phuong National Park, the forest where the EPRC is based.

Coming from illegal keeping not so long ago, these lorises were released to the wild in a strong and healthy condition thanks to the excellent care of EPRC’s keepers. But most importantly, they still possess wild behaviors that indicates a smooth readjustment to wild environment.

Grey-Shanked Douc Langurs Unexpectedly Found Deep In The Jungle

Recent Survey By Fauna & Flora International Finds 500 Grey-Shanked Doucs

A population of at least 500 grey-shanked doucs has been uncovered by Fauna & Flora International (FFI) during a recent field survey conducted in Kon Tum Province, Vietnam. This almost doubles the known global population of this enigmatic and beautiful primate.

“To discover a large population of one of Vietnam’s most rare and precious animals is truly an honour,” said Trinh Dinh Hoang, who led the survey effort. Prior to this discovery, the entire species was thought to have only 800-1,000 individuals remaining, and consequently has been listed as one of the 25 most endangered primates in the world.

Restricted to the forests of central Vietnam, the main threats to the grey-shanked douc are deforestation, habitat fragmentation and hunting. Doucs are targeted for the illegal wildlife trade and are hunted for bush meat, traditional medicine and the pet trade.
